Our good buddy and busy freelance writer, John Moore, just published an interview he did for Yesterday’s Ring. Yeserday’s Ring recently released “Diamonds in the Ditch” on Suburban Home and John spoke with Hugo of YR about how they approach songwriting for Yesterday’s Ring and how that might be different than he writes for Sainte Catherines. Check out the feature and find out the future plans of Sainte Catherines and Hugo’s thoughts on why so many punk rockers have taken to Country/Americana leanings.

Mike Hale in Toronto from Ben Conoley on Vimeo.
Two of my favorite people on the planet, Mike Hale and Coody from Ninja Gun, gets interviewed while on tour in Toronto for Exclaim magazine. Check it out, the video is pretty short and you get some nice insight from both Mike and Coody.

The highly respected Paste magazine just recently reviewed Two Cow Garage’s “Speaking in Cursive”, here is a snippet of what they had to say, “In a more just universe, Columbus, Ohio’s Two Cow Garage would be playing the big summer festivals. Instead, they detonate their killer live shows night after night in front of mostly indifferent fans in dive bars in the Midwest.
Sounding either like Steve Earle fronting The Replacements or Paul Westerberg fronting Drive-By Truckers, take your pick, these four lads rock and lope, but mostly they bash the hell out of their instruments and sing their rough and ragged but literate tales of the lost and the losers, kids who were raised on Jesus and Disney movies and meth labs, bored and lethargic and intermittently, furiously committed to busting out of their dead-end farm towns.”
Read the rest of the review at this link. I must say that I love the Steve Earle/Replacements and Paul Westerberg/Drive By Truckers comparisons.

It is always an honor when someone thinks I am interesting enough to interview. It is even more of an honor when that someone is the former singer of Honest Dons/Fat Wreck act Diesel Boy. Dave Lake who runs YuppiePunk was the singer of Diesel Boy. He contacted me the other day, and late last week we spoke about everything under the sun. I highly recommend checking out the interview and while at it, ask yourself if someone can be both a Yuppie and a Punk. I think one can and I feel like I am living proof. I feel like I learned a lot from D.I.Y. punk rock, it instilled in me values I still carry with me. But I am not gonna lie, I love nice restaurants, I love sushi, I get brunch occasionally, and I do lots of shit “real punk rockers” can’t stand.
Q&A: Virgil Dickerson of Suburban Home Records and Vinyl Collective
Thanks Dave for taking the time to interview me.

Chuck Ragan is one of our favorite musicians on the planet. How could he not? Between Hot Water Music, Rumbleseat, and his solo material, there isn’t a record we don’t all love. So it goes without saying that we have the utmost respect for him and his opinions. So when asked recently his Top albums of the last year, we were obviously honored to have had a few releases on our label mentioned. Here is an excerpt from the interview:
Top 5 (6) albums of the last year? Gaslight Anthem’s ‘59 Sound, Bruce Springsteen’s Working on a Dream, Gasoline Alley, Tim Barry’s Manchester, all of Austin Lucas’s stuff, Ben Nichols The Last Pale Light is absolutely absurd, it’s so good.
Besides Tim Barry and Austin Lucas, we too love the Gaslight Anthem and Ben Nichol’s albums; looks like I am gonna have to check out Gasoline Alley. Thanks Punknews for posting the interview and thanks Chuck for the kind words. Excited to see you in town this next week and can’t wait to hear the new album.
Read the interview here. See Chuck on tour soon with Lucero. And know that today, Chuck finishes his upcomging album; we plan to charm the hell out of him with hopes that we might be able to do an exclusive color of the vinyl through Vinyl Collective. And if Chuck’s endorsement inspires you to check out Tim’s and Austin’s albums, here are links to buy:
Tim Barry “Manchester” LP/CD
Austin Lucas “Somebody Loves You” LP/CD, pretty much everything Austin Lucas
Vinyl Vlog S1E11 w/Joey Cape(Lagwagon) & Jon Snodgrass(Drag the River) from Vinyl Vlog on Vimeo.
Our friends at Vinyl Vlog spent a little time with Joey Cape and Jon Snodgrass on their tour through the East Coast. The interview is great and goes how I thought it might. Anytime you get Joey and Jon together talking about music (or pretty much anything), this is what you can expect. They are kind of like brothers in that manner of going back and forth. Joey and Jon talk about vinyl, cassettes, upcoming releases, and much more. I highly recommend checking out the video, not only for the great interview but also for the chance to win a signed copy of the Joey Cape/Jon Snodgrass “Who Wants to Get Down” 7″. Also, Joey lets the cat out of the bag who Mike Hale is covering for his side of the Under the Influence split 7″ that they are doing together. I, myself, found out that Joey is doing a split with Kevin Seconds. I will have to find out how to get a hold of those.
Thanks Vinyl Vlog for always supporting what we do. We truly appreciate you featuring our artists on your video blog.
I will make a more formal announcement when it gets closer to the date, but we are sponsoring our favorite New England drunken video bloggers by supporting a DJ night they are hosting. The Video Vlog folks are gonna be giving away gift certificates from Vinyl Collective, records from Suburban Home, and records from our friends at Anchorless. Mark June 22nd on your calendar for what should be a rad event. I think they are also encouraging people to sell records and set up tables. Sounds like fun.

On a day like today (when I am pretty damned hungover), it is so nice to come back to lunch to see the Punknews April Best Albums Chart. Austin Lucas’ latest album, “Somebody Loves You” is #2 (beat out by a rather fantastic album), our buddies Anchor Down made it to #4, Druglords of the Avenues is #8, the Austin Lucas/Frank Turner Under the Influence is #9, the Andrew jackson Jihad/Cobra Skulls Under the Influence is #11, In the Red Volume 2 is #13, Drag the River bad at breaking up is #16, and a lot of other great releases (many of them available at Vinyl Collective) also made the chart. Take a look below. Feel free to comment on what your favorite records of last month were.

Punknews.org just posted an interview with Suburban Home’s Austin Lucas. It is a fantastic interview where Austin talks about his early years being involved with the Indiana University’s Choir, playing in Crust punk bands and having that partially destroy his voice, and his decision to play roots music more seriously. Austin has a unique outlook on Punk artists gravitating to Folk and Country being that he lived in the Czech Republic for the past 5 years and wasn’t submerged into that scene. He discusses on much Chuck Ragan has had to do with this career and how we came to work together. He even explains his thoughts on where he would like to see himself in the future. Please read the interview, it really covers a lot of ground.
Austin Lucas Interview [Punknews.org]

One of our favorite podcasts, Rocket Fuel, recently interviewed Austin Lucas. The episode has just been uploaded; we at Suburban Home just finished listening to it, and we hope that all of you will give it a listen. The interview is great and finds Austin talking about the recording process of his records, how he comes to write songs, and he even tells the story of how we (Suburban Home) started working with him. Come for the interview, but stay to listen to a ton of great tracks including tracks by Stereotyperider, Fireworks, The Wonder Years, New Found Glory, Superdrag, Gatorface, Coffee Project, The Chinese Telephones, and more.
It is a great listen. Check it out for yourself here.

Punknews.org has just posted the latest installment of Mike Hale’s “For Those Still Standing”. This episode finds Mike spending some time at the Side One Dummy headquarters, being a guest on “Complete Control”, and spending some time with Joe Sib (owner of Side One Dummy). Joe has such a great perspective on his label and his incredible roster of artists and Mike does a good job of discussing independent music with him. He even got Joe Sib to sing a song for “For Those Still Standing” (Joe was the frontman of Wax and 22 Jacks, two bands I always loved). Throughout all this, Mike also jedi-mind tricked Joe into agreeing to do a split 7″ at some point. Read about it all here:
