Help Austin Lucas get back on the road!!

Being a traveling musician is not the easiest thing to do. Often times, you get treated like shit by promoters, paid very little, and you have to drive 14 hours to get to the next show. As most of you konw, Austin Lucas is a road dog. He needs your help as his tour van needs about $3,000 worth of repairs. Please follow the link (above) and donate if you can. Here’s a bit more info:

So Austin Lucas & The Bold Party limped into Little Rock this weekend for the Two Cow Garage Tenth Anniversary Explosion in a van which is in dire need of repairs. They need between $2500-3,000 worth of repairs before they hit the road again for a 5 week run later this week. Ouch.

We all know there’s no money in rock and roll these days so we’re asking for donations to help offset the cost of repairs and keep these guys working. We recorded the entire Austin Lucas set from the Two Cow show and will be offering up that recording in digital form for all who contribute. We know time’s are hard but even a $10 contribution would be much appreciated. If you want to donate more that’d be great! If you want to get silly with the donation amount I’ll come up with a unique way to say thanks. Maybe Austin can play a house show for you or I’ll throw your birthday party at the White Water Tavern…

Thanks for supporting live music and please help spread the word to all your like minded friends and family.

You can make a PayPal donation directly to Austin using:

blownamps@hotmail.com

Century Media exits Spotify: Is there value for indie labels in making their catalogues available? [Westword]

In a press release last week, Century Media announced it would be pulling its music from the streaming music service Spotify. Since then, there has been a lot of talk about Spotify’s payout to labels and the widespread adoption of this new service. Thorin Klosowski of Westword recently wrote a feature about Spotify, Century Media, and took feedback from a number of Colorado labels including yours truly. It’s an interesting piece that I recommend checking out. You might already be enjoying Spotify (I know I have been), but you may have never considered what labels and artists get paid when their tracks are played.

What do you think of Spotify? If you are a label or artist, what are your thoughts of Spotify’s payouts?

Some of the best ideas are born over drinks at a bar. The Guinness Book of World Records began as a discussion at a pub about what the fastest flying species of bird. Conversely some of the worst ideas get their start this way, too. While Micah and Shane of Two Cow Garage were in town this past weekend, we were having a few drinks and somehow got on the discussion of The Lemonheads. At some point in the conversation, Shane says, “I’ve always wanted to perform the entire album It’s a Shame About Ray”. Being the huge Lemonheads fan that I am, I told the guys that I would be honored if they might consider performing It’s a Shame About Ray at Suburban Home’s 16th Anniversary. Much like Tom Cruise in “Risky Business”, the guys said, “Fuck It” and agreed to make it happen. As fate would have it, Lizzie Huffman was also having drinks with us and as most of you may know, Juliana Hatfield was a member of the Lemonheads during this era. Obviously, we asked if she might contribute some Hatfield-esque vocals to the performance and she said yes. This is going to be a very special performance and I really hope you can make it. Our good buddy, James Freeman, from That’s The Thing About That has agreed to record the performance so don’t be surprised if a free download of this cover set becomes available.

Every week leading up to the big weekend, I will be announcing the acts playing Suburban Home’s 16th Anniversary Party. The festivities will begin Friday, September 9th and end on Sunday, September 11th. There will be 2 nights of shows at 3 Kings Tavern (Friday and Saturday) and we will end the weekend with a big BBQ/Washer’s Tournament on that Sunday. Expect some other fun things thrown in the middle of it all.

CONFIRMED SO FAR FOR SUBURBAN HOME’S SUPER SWEET 16

For those of you who don’t know, Nine Bullets has a really great radio show that airs every Thursday night. I typically catch the stream of it the next day. The show is fantastic and often times, Nine Bullets is kind enough to play Suburban Home acts. Nine bullets needs to raise $1200 to keep his show on the air and I’m hoping some of you consider donating.

I actually donated a pack of vinyl and a pack of CDs in hopes some of you will donate a little more than normal and get all of these great records.

For all the information on the pledge drive and all the great stuff you can win, please visit the link above.

Good luck Nine Bullets.

I regretfully share with you the news that Tim Barry has made the decision to move his catalog to Chunksaah Records. I’ve worked with Tim Barry for close to 5 years now since first hearing a CD r copy of “Laurel Street Demos” I feel very lucky to have been able to work with Tim. I have the utmost respect for him and wish him nothing but the best in the future. Chunksaah is a very great label and I know that they will work well together. With all that said, note that my remaining copies of Tim Barry’s catalog will soon be out of print. I recommend picking up copies of the Suburban Home albums before they are gone.

Below is the official statement on Tim Barry moving his catalog to Chunksaah Records:

Chunksaah Records is proud to announce the re-release of TIM BARRY’s “28th & Stonewall,” “Manchester” and “Rivanna Junction” albums in all formats (CD, LP and Digital) – May 10, 2011. The CD versions will all be re-issued as digipacks and the LP versions will be on embossed reverse-board with colored vinyl (translation: fancy!!!)

Here’s what Chunksaah Records had to say about the re-issues: “Tim Barry has long been a member of our family and we are excited to expand the ways in which we are spreading the good word of music and family worldwide! We will be offi cially celebrating on Good Friday (aka Friday April 22nd, 2011) at the Asbury Lanes, in our fair city-by-the-sea – Asbury Park, NJ. Who knew that Tim would turn Yankee? haha.”

Tim said, “Moving my back catalog of albums from Suburban Home Records to Chunksaah Records was not an easy decision to make, considering the incredible relationship I share with Suburban Home, both personally and as a record label. However, I felt the need to have every aspect of my musical support crew in one place. With this change, my booking agent, publicist, merchandise company, much of my road crew and
now record label are all located in the the Great State of New Jersey – the Asbury Park area to be specific.”

Richard Marshall, father to Jamin and Jesse Marshall of Larry & His Flask, a full time aircraft mechanic for Butler Aircraft, in their small plane division in Redmond, Oregon was recently diagnosed with Advanced Pancreatic Cancer. This came as a complete surprise to everyone and he is now receiving massive Chemo-Therapy treatments in Phoenix, Arizona at a Cancer Treatment Center that has had success in treating this very invasive type of cancer.
This requires him to travel to and from Phoenix every two weeks for treatment. While he does have some insurance coverage it does not begin to cover the massive medical, lodging and travel expenses that they are experiencing and no one knows what future treatment and expenses they will have.
A little goes a long way. Whatever you can donate will help. Larry & His Flask is an amazing band who put their heart and soul into their music and band & we would like to share our heart and soul into helping our brothers in need.

Our friends at Resist Records (in Australia) recently set up auctions to benefit those impacted by the recent flooding in Queensland. Please read below and check out the auction link to find a ton of great records for sale. I donated test pressings from Two Cow Garage’s “Sweet Saint Me” and Tim Barry’s “28th & Stonewall”. In addition to those test pressings, there are testpressings and records from Against Me, Chuck Ragan, Give up the Ghost, Paint It Black, Lifetime, Hot Water Music, and more.

In a bid to assist those effected by the recent flooding in Queensland, Resist set up an EBAY auction selling off rare, out of print and test press’s of various vinyl released over the years with all proceeds raised going to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal. Not long after launching, bands, artists and labels from around the world offered their support, donating various items towards the cause.

A new list of items have been added to the auction including a custom made guitar signed by Against Me!, silk screened posters by The Gaslight Anthem and Acacia Strain, rare vinyl from Hot Water Music, Chuck Ragan, Epitaph, Revelation, Jade Tree, Suburban Home, Bridge 9, No Idea, React and Trial & Error Records with many new items being added daily.

For more information check this link.
