October Suburban Home Buddy of the Month: Haley McHaney

sea

I am excited to introduce you to our October Suburban Home Buddy of the Month, Haley McHaney. Haley is from Atlanta, but I had the opportunity to meet her here in Denver when her and her girlfriends flew out from Atlanta to Denver for Suburban Home’s 14th Anniversary weekend. Her and her girls helped make our 14th Anniversary an unforgettable weekend and at one point on Sunday night (after the Anniversary, at the Gaslight Anthem show), Haley told me so many nice things about what Suburban Home meant to her. It absolutely blew me away and it dawned on me then and there that Haley should be our October Buddy of the Month. I still can’t believe that 1 person would enjoy what our little label does enough to fly out to Denver, but there were so many great people from all over the United States and that was just amazing.

Haley rules so I encourage you to read on as Haley explains her first introduction to Suburban Home, SH and non-SH bands she loves, bands she would sign if she ran Suburban Home, and more.

Thanks Haley for all the support and thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

SH: Your name and the city you live in. What do you do for a living?
My name is Haley McHaney and I live in Atlanta, Ga.; to be specific East Atlanta Village. I like living where I am because I’m so close to so many great venues. I just recently got to see Cory Branan, Jon Snodgrass and Joey Cape at The Earl and it was AMAZING. This was really big for me because I had never gotten to see Jon Snodgrass or Joey Cape (until the anniversary!) before and every other time I had seen Cory Branan he was opening for someone and only got to play a handful of songs. I have lived in Georgia most of my life and was about to not be able to breathe here any longer until I moved downtown, but now I think I’ll be able to bide my time a little while longer. For my next adventure I think I’d like to try Denver. DO IT HALEY

By day I’m an asset manager, I won’t bore you with the details. I’m a corporate zombie.

SH: How did you find out about Suburban Home, what was the first SH release you ever purchased?
I was introduced to Tim Barry by a friend probably about four years ago and thusly found Suburban Home Records and purchased Rivanna Junction and Laurel Street Demo. I became more interested in the bands I heard through the website and the sampler CDs and became hooked! Since then I’ve found a real connection with almost every band on the label. It’s almost as though ya’ll are the soundtrack to my life.

SH: What is your favorite Suburban Home release? Favorite Suburban Home artists?
I’m going to have to stay true to Rivanna Junction because it was my first! Ive also grown to love The Takers, Tim Barry, Jon Snodgrass, Drag The River, Austin Lucas, Two Cow Garage, Josh Smalls, Mike Hale, Joey Cape, Look Mexico, Stereotyperider, and Scott Reynolds and the Steaming Beast. A lot of what I like about the music on this label is it reminds me of the stuff my Dad used to listen to growing up but with a twist.

SH: What other labels do you follow?
You know Suburban Home Records is the label I follow the most. It’s honestly the only label in recent years that I have liked all the artist collectively. I also like Lookout! Records, Fat Wreck Chords and SideOneDummy

SH: What are some of your favorite non-Suburban Home artists?
Um am I allowed to write a bunch here? If not I fear I will have left someone out and not be able to sleep tonight..

I need some advise though on what type of player to get? check out the help me choose a turntable thread on our message board

SH: Where do you buy Suburban Home releases?
Through the website

SH: If you ran Suburban Home, what band would you sign?

SH: Which Suburban Home artists have you seen live, which artist(s) on Suburban Home that you haven’t seen are you looking forward to seeing?
Well I’m a little spoiled since I was just lucky enough to get to see most all in you one place.. Drag the River and Scott Reynolds and the Steaming Beast are still on my to do list.

SH: We at Suburban Home realize that we are a small label and are always interested in hearing suggestions on what we can do better, any suggestions?

Please see the most recent posting of calls for the answer to this question..

SH: Do you have any interesting Suburban Home related stories?
I do faintly recall letting most everyone at Saturday night’s show that I was going to kick their ass at washers. Little known fact about me.. I have no idea how to play washers.
