Suburban Home to release The Playing Favorites’ debut album

Running Suburban Home has allowed me to do some very cool things. I have toured with our bands too all parts of the world (including Japan and Europe), met so many incredible people (including my wife and some of best friends), experienced some of my favorite stories, and releasing some of my favorite records on the planet. Now I can add another item to my list, releasing Joey Cape’s latest project, The Playing Favorites (who were temporarily called Dead Penguin).

For as long as I can remember, I have loved everything Joey Cape has been a part of. When I first heard “Know It All” on the “Fat Music for Fat People” comp, I immediately purchased “Trashed” and became an instant fan. I fell in love with everything Lagwagon ever did (”Let’s Talk about Feelings” is my favorite). When Joey started My Records, he released some of the greatest records including a band that we would later work with, Adventures of Jet. The My Records’ site also had a really rad mix tape that at the time turned me onto a number of new acts including the Shins and Grandaddy. Later, Joey started Bad Astronaut and as he evolved so too did my musical tastes. I fell in love with Bad Astronaut and absolutely loved all 3 records (my favorite is “Houston We have a Drinking Problem”). Much like the Bobs in Office Space were to Michael Bolton, I am to Joey Cape, I can easily say the following:

I’ll be honest with you, I love his music, I do, I’m a Joey Cape fan. For my money, I don’t know if it gets any better than when he sings “insert any Lagwagon/Bad Astronaut/Joey Cape song”.

That said, we will be releasing Joey Cape’s latest project, The Playing Favorites. The Playing Favorites is a project with 4 of Joey’s closest friends; he has compared the music to Pinkerton era Weezer. They had been calling the band Dead Penguin, but recently settled with the Playing Favorites of which Joey had the following to say:

Well, after about 2 years of deliberation, we have settled on “The Playing Favorites” as a band name. I am finally going to send you some rough mixes in the next few days. Moving forward… like the tortoise.

The album which is yet to be titled will be mixed by Jason Livermore at the Blasting Room in the coming weeks and the artwork is being put together as we speak. We haven’t set a release date yet, but we hope to have it released before the end of the year. This is really exciting for me and I am so psyched to be able to release this album. More details will be posted soon.
